From Concept to Reality: The Journey of 'Beyond The Illusions'

Hello, fellow gamers and adventurers! Welcome to the devlog of my very first game, Beyond The Illusions. Buckle up as I take you through my journey of creating this psychological horror FPS, from start to finish!

  • March 20, 2024: It all started with the initial plan to develop a game called Memories. I began working with Godot 4.2, but soon realized that managing this ambitious project alongside my academic schedule would take too long. I also wanted something impressive to add to my college applications.
  • Pivot Point: To adapt, I came up with a shorter concept: a maze with a bit of parkour to enhance a horror walking simulator. I named it The Mountain Cave Mystery. But, after finding it challenging to implement procedural mazes, I decided to pivot again, this time taking inspiration from Temple Run 3D, but in a first-person perspective with horror elements.
  • New Direction, New Name: This led to the birth of Beyond The Illusions. I created the concept trailer and moved quickly through development, reaching the Alpha stage with basic locations.
  • Exciting Additions: I added new elements like a lava river, zipline, memory fragments, and mystical objects. I initially planned a boss fight but later decided to drop that idea to maintain the game’s flow.
  • Trailer 2 & Beta: Trailer 2 was released, and after around 30 hours of work, I reached the Beta stage, focusing on polishing and fixing known bugs.
  • Performance Optimization: I noticed the high-quality models and textures were causing performance issues on low-end devices. So, I switched to creating my own low-poly models and textures, optimizing for performance.
  • Soundtrack Creation: I started working on an original soundtrack for the main menu and end credits to make the experience more immersive.
  • Final Trailer & Launch: After launching the final trailer, I published the page on September 5th at 11 PM IST, but I forgot to include the executable file! 😭😭 By 11 AM IST the next day, I uploaded the missing .exe file. Now, the game is live and ready to be tested by players.
  • Feedback Welcome: I'm eager to hear your feedback to help me improve further! You can also listen to the game’s soundtrack on YouTube Music.
  • Looking Ahead: This game was very unplanned and marked my first effort in game development as a 16-year-old. I’m already working on my next project, Memories, which I plan to take more time with and develop into something truly unique.
  • More from Me: If you enjoy my work, you can check out my eBook The T'N'T: Prologue on my website hyprZona. It’s a Noir novel showcasing my narrative skills – recommended to read on the hyprZona Reader for an enhanced experience!

See you again in the Dark Magical World of Memories!
